"Dog attacks are the number one public health problem of children,
with more than half of children bitten by age 12 -  Dr. Dan Simpson,
spokesperson for the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association.
Dog bites are not just a normal part of childhood; they are traumatic
and largely preventable. Dog bite prevention education can play an
important role in increasing child safety around dogs.

The Canada Safety council estimates that 460,000 people are bitten by
dogs in Canada each year. The figure is 10 times this in the US.
According to Health Canada and US sources, most of the victims are
children. The most common bite site is the face and in most cases the
dog that bit was their own dog, a friend's or neighbour's dog and the
bite occurred at someone's home. Clearly these data indicate that
most bites are preventable through supervision, education of children
and families and better training of dogs to accept the actions of
    children."
This page is dedicated to all the dogs who died because they bit people.
Sadly, I have met too many of these dead dogs walking.  If you have a dog who
growls, snaps or bites, call for professional help.  The problem will not just go
away.
This bite was inflicted by a 35 lb
dog who bit the arm once.
    Imagine what would have
happened had this been a larger
dog, multiple bites,  bite to the
face, and/or a bite to a child.   This
bite did not break the skin.

    This small dog named
Sydney was a fear biter who
    bit several people
    repeatedly.  He was put to
    death. His death was directly
the result of the people who
    abused  and neglected him.
    Animal Control removed this
dog from his home and tried
to save him.  He was not safe
    to adopt out.

Dog Bite Facts
An infant was killed by a Pomeranian dog. The
average weight of a Pomeranian is about 4 pounds,
and they are not thought of as a dangerous breed.
Note, however, that they were bred to be watchdogs!
The baby's uncle left the infant and the dog on a bed
while the uncle prepared her bottle in the kitchen.
Upon his return, the dog was mauling the baby, who
died shortly afterwards. ("Baby Girl Killed by Family
Dog," Los Angeles Times, Monday, B-5.)
