Reactive Dog Class
7 week course - one hour per week
Class is limited to 4 dogs.
Class fee: $225
Reactive dogs exhibit behaviors such as excessive barking, lunging, jumping, and
howling in response to other dogs or people nearby. Owners of reactive dogs often
feel embarrssed and frustrated. Taking the dog on a walk or to a class is a nightmare
when you have a reactive dog. It is not fun to be the one in the room with the dog
going nuts on the end of the lead while the other dogs seem calm.
In a typical group class, it is hard for the instructor to give the reactive dog owner and
dog the attention and guidance they need. People who live with reactive dogs can
benefit from a class tailored to meet their needs. That is why we have added this
class to the course offerings.
In this course, we will:
- Help you to identify and understand your dog's triggers
- Show you techniques for managing and redirecting your dog while you are also
teaching your dog basic obedience
- Show you how to encourage and reinforce acceptable behavior with reward-
based techniques
Children are not permitted to handle a dog in this class.
Required reading for this class is Feisty Fido: Help for Leash Aggressive Dog by
Patricia McConnell & Karen London. The book is included in the class fee.
Relax your Grip on the Leash and Enjoy Your Walk Workshop
Workshop is one session – one hour long
Workshop is limited to 4 dogs.
Fee: $40
Loose leash walking is one of the most challenging behaviors to teach both
dogs and their owners. Most owners are experts at teaching the dog to pull
without even realizing it. These same owners can learn how to teach their dog
not to pull.
Many owners are seeking the magic tool that will make the dog walk next to
them. Many tools exist to manage the behavior. Head halters, no pull
harnesses, training collars, and prong collars are the ones most often used.
Such equipment is a management tool and does not train the dog not to pull.
Most dogs will immediately returning to pulling if the head halter, training
collar, etc is removed. That in itself shows that the dog has not learned to walk
nicely on leash. Using management tools is fine. However if you want to teach
your dog not to pull, you can do it!
Learn how to stop reinforcing pulling and to start reinforcing loose leash
walking. This one session workshop is designed to get you started!
Class is limited to 6 dogs
Class fee: $150
Do you have a dog that comes when she wants to or does the “Just a second…let me
sniff this and I will be right with you” routine? Think about what would happen if your
dog were running toward a highway and did not respond instantly to your call. The
consequences can be tragic.
In this class, you will begin to condition your dog to respond reliably to a recall
command. The goal is for your dog to hear the command and instantly respond as a
reflex. You will learn the techniques for training your dog to perform a great Recall
that will be invaluable.
