K9 Nose Work is an exciting new sport!

    What is K9 Nose Work?

K9 Nose Work is the specific sport created and sanctioned by the
National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW).  This sport was
inspired by the training methodology of detection K9s and borrows
elements of that training for recreation.  The terms nose work, fun nose
work, scent work, search work are all commonly used references to
describe any activity where the dog is using its nose to locate a target
scent or odor.  K9 Nose Work is the term that defines this detection
inspired sport that has evolved from the pursuit of many dogs (with their
handlers) to practice nose work and have fun."

Read more about this exciting and fun sport on the web  National
    Association of Canine Scent Work

Trials in the Northeast are not expected to start until 2011.  It takes
months of work to get ready to compete.  Again – read the info on the
link above to decide if the sport is of interest to you.

For those of you who have done some work already, this may seem
easy and a class may not seem necessary.  However to get you and
your dog ready to compete – this is like any other competitive sport.  If
you were to work towards competing in agility – it might be 2 yrs
before your dog is ready to compete.  In search and rescue – a
guideline for getting a dog certified is 2 years!  It took me 2 years to get
my Golden ready to test,  through all the testing, and certified.

K-9 Nose Work is a great game.  However, it is also a fun competitive
sport in which you compete for titles.

Classes (6 weeks each) that will be offered over the next several
    months are:

  • Level 1 "Intro to Nose Work" (All dogs welcome with exception of
    dogs with aggression towards people)

  • Level II "Intro to Odor" (must complete Intro to Nose work to enter
    this class)

  • Level III "Continuing Nose Work"  (must complete "Intro to Odor" to
    participate)

    Rules

Only one dog allowed in the room at a time. No exceptions.

    You must be able to:
  • leave your dog in the car (if not too hot/cold)
  • crate your dog outside the back door of the training center –
    weather permitting
  • crate your dog in your crate in my office.

Each dog will work only a couple times each session. Part of the
learning is in observing so you  must stay to watch other dogs work.

Attached is a link to a great video showing a dog doing advanced
Nose Work.  This is awesome!  Advanced Nose Work Video

K9 Nose Work  - Level 1- Introduction  to Nose Work

K9 Nose Work Classes are fun for both dog and handler and are based on scent detection training. Your dog will
get to use his/her amazing sense of smell in a fun game that involves food, toys, and mental exercise!  In this
class, your dog will have fun, build confidence and burn lots of mental and physical energy.  However even old
dogs can participate in the sport – it is not physically demanding – it is mentally challenging.

For people who want to compete in official trials, K9 Nose Work classes will help you prepare for K9 Nose Work
Trials.  Rules and regulations for the competitions can be found at the National Association of Canine Scent Work
website:  National Association for Canine Scent Work   Trials in the NE are not expected to start until 2011.  It is
important to understand that it takes months of work to get ready to compete.

All dogs welcome with exception of dogs with aggression towards people or who are food aggressive.  Only one
dog will be allowed in the training room at a time.  This allows dogs to work without distractions.  More importantly
    – it allows dogs who are reactive to other dogs to participate.  Most dog sports do not allow dog-reactive dogs to
participate.  Nose Work is designed to allow such dogs to participate and have fun.  Dogs not working will be
    crated in my office.

    Class Fee of $125 includes
  • 5 classes. 1 hour per week.
  • Minimum: 4 dogs.  Maximum: 6 dogs
