Old Man passed away today. His spirit was strong, but his body was
slowly failing him. Old Man's final days were happy and
comfortable. He loved his regular meals and the comfort of his
Kuranda bed. The staff and volunteers became his family, the shelter
his final home. Old Man left this world with kindness and dignity.
Shame on whoever abandoned him.
He was picked up as a stray and no one claimed him. How anyone
could have a dog his entire life and not looked for him is difficult to
comprehend. Old Man was quite old, had numerous skin growths,
weak hips, was hard of hearing and had poor eyesight. Old Man
liked to eat, go for slow walks, and take naps. Not much to ask for
after years of being someone's loyal dog. Sadly, it seems that they
did not deserve his loyalty.
The people at the shelter loved him and cared for him for the few
days he was with us. How he came to be left on the streets to fend
for himself probably will never be known. He left this world in a
shelter surrounded by strangers - caring strangers who will never
forget him.
A puppy grows to be a dog. A dog can live a long life. If you cannot
be there for a dog throughout his/her life, then don't get that puppy
or dog. Pets are not meant to be throwaways. They are living,
feeling, loving beings who depend on us to take care of them when
they turn old and feeble.
We see too many senior animals who are never claimed. Each one
breaks our hearts. We can't take them all home even though we all
have done it. However, not many people will take a senior dog into
their homes. Many seniors lose out on a last chance for safety,
security and love. They die on the streets and in shelters every day.
