Safety Around Dogs - A Workshop for Families Children Ages 5 to 12 (All children must be with an adult)
Fee per child: $10 Adults are free. You must preregister. Minimum: 6 children Maximum: 20 children.
This one hour program focuses on teaching children how to be safe around dogs. It also gives parents tools for recognizing danger signs. Even if you don't own a dog, this session will give you valuable information about how to be safe around other people's dogs. Children are bitten most often and usually by either the family pet or a friend's dog.
Why I am offering this workshop
Calls from owners whose dogs have bitten someone are heartbreaking for me to get. Many bites could have been prevented if the owners recognized the signs that trouble was brewing. However, not everyone recognizes the danger signs until the problem has escalated to a bite.
I get calls from people who have owned their dogs since they were puppies. Breeds I have gotten calls about include Labs and Goldens. Yes, Labs and Goldens. Any dog can bite; they are animals.
My goal is to help you and your children learn how to be safe around dogs.
If you, a family member, or a friend have a dog that: growls, snaps or curls her lip at anyone, guards her food bowl, toys or bones, or furniture go to the section Dog Bite Information. Download the article at the top of that page for more information about danger signs and what to do.
Read the articles about children attacked by dogs. The articles are graphic, but are the reality of children and dogs who are unsupervised and untrained (the dog, the child, and the adults).
